SEGUNDA-FEIRA DA 4ª SEMANA DA QUARESMA

A Epístola de hoje refere o célebre julgamento de Salomão. Uma das mulheres que requeriam justiça abafara o filho durante o sono e invejava o da rival, que vivia. Esta mulher é a figura da Sinagoga, cujos príncipes sufocaram pela sua indiferença a vida religiosa em Israel e invejavam a fortuna dos gentios aos quais a Igreja confere  a vida nova por meio do Batismo e da Penitência. O Evangelho foi escolhido  por aludir  ao templo de Salomão. Mas uma vez a Igreja se empenha em mostrar, como de resto o fez durante toda a Quaresma, que a história do Antigo Testamento  não é mais que a preexistência figurada de tudo o que a Igreja e de Jesus Cristo iam de realizar mais tarde.

Leitura (I Rs 3, 16-28)

Leitura do Primeiro Livro dos Reis.

Naqueles dias: Vieram duas prostitutas apresentar-se ao rei. Uma delas disse: Ouve, meu senhor: Esta mulher e eu habitamos na mesma casa, e eu dei à luz junto dela no mesmo aposento. Três dias depois, deu também ela à luz. Ora, nós vivemos juntas, e não havia nenhum estranho conosco nessa casa, pois somente nós duas estávamos ali. Durante a noite morreu o filho dessa mulher, porque o abafou enquanto dormia. Levantou-se ela então, no meio da noite, e enquanto a tua serva dormia, tomou o meu filho que estava junto de mim e o deitou em seu seio, deixando no meu o seu filho morto. Quando me levantei pela manhã para amamentar o meu filho, encontrei-o morto; mas, examinando-o atentamente à luz, verifiquei que não era o filho que eu dera à luz. É mentira!, replicou a outra mulher, o que está vivo é meu filho; o teu é que morreu. A primeira contestou: Não é assim; o teu filho é o que morreu, o que está vivo é o meu. E assim disputavam diante do rei. O rei disse então: Tu dizes: é o meu filho que está vivo, e o teu é o que morreu; e tu replicas: não é assim; é o teu filho que morreu, e o meu é o que está vivo. Vejamos, continuou o rei; trazei-me uma espada. Trouxeram ao rei uma espada. Cortai pelo meio o menino vivo, disse ele, e dai metade a uma e metade à outra. Mas a mulher, mãe do filho vivo, sentiu suas entranhas enternecerem-se e disse ao rei: Rogo-te, meu senhor, que dês a ela o menino vivo; não o mateis; a outra, porém, dizia: Ele não será nem teu, nem meu; seja dividido! Então o rei pronunciou o seu julgamento: Dai, disse ele, o menino vivo a essa mulher; não o mateis, pois é ela a sua mãe. Todo o Israel, ouvindo o julgamento pronunciado pelo rei, encheu-se de respeito por ele, pois via-se que o inspirava a sabedoria divina para fazer justiça.

Evangelho (Jo 2, 13-25)

Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: Estava próxima a Páscoa dos judeus, e Jesus subiu a Jerusalém. Encontrou no templo os negociantes de bois, ovelhas e pombas, e mesas dos trocadores de moedas. Fez ele um chicote de cordas, expulsou todos do templo, como também as ovelhas e os bois, espalhou pelo chão o dinheiro dos trocadores e derrubou as mesas. Disse aos que vendiam as pombas: Tirai isto daqui e não façais da casa de meu Pai uma casa de negociantes. Lembraram-se então os seus discípulos do que está escrito: O zelo da tua casa me consome (Sl 68,10). Perguntaram-lhe os judeus: Que sinal nos apresentas tu, para procederes deste modo? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Destruí vós este templo, e eu o reerguerei em três dias. Os judeus replicaram: Em quarenta e seis anos foi edificado este templo, e tu hás de levantá-lo em três dias?! Mas ele falava do templo do seu corpo. Depois que ressurgiu dos mortos, os seus discípulos lembraram-se destas palavras e creram na Escritura e na palavra de Jesus Enquanto Jesus celebrava em Jerusalém a festa da Páscoa, muitos creram no seu nome, à vista dos milagres que fazia. Mas Jesus mesmo não se fiava neles, porque os conhecia a todos. Ele não necessitava que alguém desse testemunho de nenhum homem, pois ele bem sabia o que havia no homem.

In that time, came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

Gospel (John 2: 13-25)

And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
