TERÇA-FEIRA DA 2ª SEMANA DA QUARESMA

A estação de hoje reunia-se no santuário de Santa Balbina, virgem romana, que viveu no século II e era filha de São Quirino.

O Evangelho condena a atitude dos fariseus, que se valiam da lei de Moisés pra se por orgulharem e carregarem os outros com preceitos que eles mesmos não podiam cumprir.

A Epístola mostra-nos Elias indo pedir de comer a uma pagã de Sarepta, porque a seca tinha desolado as colheitas de Israel impenitente. Esta mulher pega em dois bocados de madeira, símbolo da cruz do Salvador, e prepara um pão para profeta Elias e para ela, recebendo com usura a recompensa da sua caridade, porque nunca mais lhe faltou pão na massadeira. E deste modo enquanto os judeus padecem de fome, porque rejeitaram a graça de Cristo, os gentios receberam o pão da doutrina cristã e da carne do Senhor, que lhes asseguraram os frutos da redenção.

Leitura (I Reis 17, 8-16)

Leitura do Primeiro Livro dos Reis

Naqueles dias: Disse o  Senhor a Elias disse-lhe: Vai para Sarepta de Sidon e fixa-te ali: ordenei a uma viúva desse lugar que te sustente. Elias pôs-se a caminho para Sarepta. Chegando à porta da cidade, viu uma viúva que ajuntava lenha. Chamou-a e disse-lhe: Por favor, vai buscar-me um pouco de água numa vasilha para que eu beba. E indo ela buscar-lhe a água, gritou-lhe Elias: Traze-me também um pedaço de pão. Pela vida de Deus, respondeu a mulher, não tenho pão cozido: só tenho um punhado de farinha na panela e um pouco de óleo na ânfora; estava justamente apanhando dois pedaços de lenha para preparar esse resto para mim e meu filho, a fim de o comermos, e depois morrermos. Elias replicou: Não temas; volta e faze como disseste; mas prepara-me antes com isso um pãozinho, e traze-mo; depois prepararás o resto para ti e teu filho. Porque eis o que diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: a farinha que está na panela não se acabará, e a ânfora de azeite não se esvaziará, até o dia em que o Senhor fizer chover sobre a face da terra. A mulher foi e fez o que disse Elias. Durante muito tempo ela teve o que comer, e a sua casa, e Elias. A farinha não se acabou na panela nem se esgotou o óleo da ânfora, como o Senhor o tinha dito pela boca de Elias.

Evangelho (Mt 23, 1-12)

Naquele tempo, Dirigindo-se, então, Jesus à multidão e aos seus discípulos,disse: Os escribas e os fariseus sentaram-se na cadeira de Moisés. Observai e fazei tudo o que eles dizem, mas não façais como eles, pois dizem e não fazem. Atam fardos pesados e esmagadores e com eles sobrecarregam os ombros dos homens, mas não querem movê-los sequer com o dedo. Fazem todas as suas ações para serem vistos pelos homens, por isso trazem largas faixas e longas franjas nos seus mantos. Gostam dos primeiros lugares nos banquetes e das primeiras cadeiras nas sinagogas. Gostam de ser saudados nas praças públicas e de ser chamados rabi pelos homens. Mas vós não vos façais chamar rabi, porque um só é o vosso preceptor, e vós sois todos irmãos. E a ninguém chameis de pai sobre a terra, porque um só é vosso Pai, aquele que está nos céus. Nem vos façais chamar de mestres, porque só tendes um Mestre, o Cristo. O maior dentre vós será vosso servo.  Aquele que se exaltar será humilhado, e aquele que se humilhar será exaltado. Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas! Vós fechais aos homens o Reino dos céus.

Lesson (I Kings 17: 8-16)

Lesson from the First Book of Kings.

In those days the word of the Lord came to Elias the Thesbite, saying, Arise and go to Sarephta of the Sidonians, and dwell there; for I have commanded a widow-woman there to feed thee. He arose, and went to Sarephta: and when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow-woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her, Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And when she was going to fetch it, he called after her, saying, Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand; and she answered, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruse; behold I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. And Elias said to her, Fear not, but go and do as thou hast said; but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth­cake, and bring it to me; and after make for thyself and thy son. For thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruse of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth. She went, and did according to the word of Elias; and he ate, and she, and her house; and from that day the pot of meal wasted not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of the Lord, which He spoke in the hand of Elias.

Gospel (Matt. 23: 1-12)

The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew. 

At that time, Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses, All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do; but according to their works do ye not: for they say and do not. For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but with a finger of their own they will not move them. And all their works they do for to be seen of men; for they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes; and they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues and salutations in the marketplace, and to be called by men Rabbi. But be not you called Rabbi; for one is your master, and all you are brethren; and call none your father upon earth, for one is your Father, Who is in Heaven; neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, Christ. He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
