VÍGILIA DA NATIVIDADE DE SÃO JOÃO BATISTA
A Santa Igreja faz preceder de Vigília o nascimento de São João Batista que ocorre amanhã, três meses após a anunciação, em que o anjo Gabriel anunciou a Maria que a sua parenta Isabel estava grávida de seis meses e que em breve teria um filho.

Leitura (Jr 1,4-10)
Leitura do profeta Jeremias.
Naqueles dias: Foi-me dirigida nestes termos a palavra do Senhor: Antes que no seio fosses formado, eu já te conhecia; antes de teu nascimento, eu já te havia consagrado, e te havia designado profeta das nações. E eu respondi: Ah! Senhor, eu nem sei falar, pois que sou apenas uma criança. Replicou porém o Senhor: Não digas: Sou apenas uma criança: porquanto irás procurar todos aqueles aos quais te enviar, e a eles dirás o que eu te ordenar. Não deverás temê-los porque estarei contigo para livrar-te – oráculo do Senhor. E o Senhor, estendendo em seguida a sua mão, tocou-me na boca. E assim me falou: Eis que coloco minhas palavras nos teus lábios. Vê: dou-te hoje poder sobre as nações e sobre os reinos para arrancares e demolires, para arruinares e destruíres, para edificares e plantares.

Naquele tempo, nos tempos de Herodes, rei da Judéia, houve um sacerdote por nome Zacarias, da classe de Abias; sua mulher, descendente de Aarão, chamava-se Isabel. Ambos eram justos diante de Deus e observavam irrepreensivelmente todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor. Mas não tinham filho, porque Isabel era estéril e ambos de idade avançada. Ora, exercendo Zacarias diante de Deus as funções de sacerdote, na ordem da sua classe, coube-lhe por sorte, segundo o costume em uso entre os sacerdotes, entrar no santuário do Senhor e aí oferecer o perfume. Todo o povo estava de fora, à hora da oferenda do perfume. Apareceu-lhe então um anjo do Senhor, em pé, à direita do altar do perfume. Vendo-o, Zacarias ficou perturbado, e o temor assaltou-o. Mas o anjo disse-lhe: Não temas, Zacarias, porque foi ouvida a tua oração: Isabel, tua mulher, dar-te-á um filho, e chamá-lo-ás João. Ele será para ti motivo de gozo e alegria, e muitos se alegrarão com o seu nascimento; porque será grande diante do Senhor e não beberá vinho nem cerveja, e desde o ventre de sua mãe será cheio do Espírito Santo; ele converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor, seu Deus, e irá adiante de Deus com o espírito e poder de Elias para reconduzir os corações dos pais aos filhos e os rebeldes à sabedoria dos justos, para preparar ao Senhor um povo bem disposto.

In those days the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Before I formed thee in the bowels of thy mother, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and made thee a prophet unto the nations. And I said, Ah, ah, ah, Lord God; behold I can not speak; for I am a child. And the Lord said to me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee; and whatever I shall command thee, thou shalt speak. Be not afraid at their presence; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. And the Lord put forth His hand, and touched my mouth: and the Lord said to me, Behold I have given My words in thy mouth: lo, I have set thee this day over the nations, and over kingdoms, to root up, and to pull down, and to waste, and to destroy, and to build, and to plant; saith the Lord almighty.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth: and they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame. And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years. And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function, in the order of his course, before God, according to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord; and all the multitude of the people was praying without at the hour of incense: and there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zachary seeing him was troubled, and fear fell upon him; but the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John; and thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his nativity. For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother’s womb. And he shall convert many of the children of Isræl to the Lord their God; and he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, that he may turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.
