SEXTA-FEIRA DA 4ª SEMANA DA QUARESMA

(Dia de Abstinência e meditação da Via Crucis)

Era na antiga casa de Santo Eusébio, transformada em Igreja, que a estação de hoje se congregava. A Epístola e o Evangelho de hoje referem uma dupla ressurreição, semelhante da qual é operada na alma dos penitentes e dos catecúmenos. A mãe que recorre a Elias representa a raça pagã. Enquanto que os judeus são repelidos para fora do reino, nós descendentes dos pagãos, participamos pelos sacramentos do Batismo e da Penitência, da Ressurreição daquele que é a própria Ressurreição e a vida. Lázaro deitado no túmulo e atado de pés e mãos representa também o pecador privado da vida sobrenatural e agrilhoados pelas cadeias do pecado, esperando que chegue o Libertador.
Preparemo-nos para a confissão e comunhão pascal e procuremos nestes últimos dias que nos restam da Quaresma empregar maios esforço n orientação dos nossos interesses espirituais.

Leitura (II Reis 17, 17-24)

Leitura do Segundo Livro dos Reis.

Naqueles dias: Algum tempo depois, o filho desta mulher, dona da casa, adoeceu, e seu mal era tão grave que já não respirava. A mulher disse a Elias: Que há entre nós dois, homem de Deus? Vieste, pois, à minha casa para lembrarme os meus pecados e matar o meu filho? Dá-me o teu filho, respondeu-lhe Elias. Ele tomou-o dos braços de sua mãe e levou-o ao quarto de cima onde dormia e deitou-o em seu leito. Em seguida, orou ao Senhor, dizendo: Senhor, meu Deus, até a uma viúva, que me hospeda, quereis afligir, matando-lhe o filho? Estendeu-se em seguida sobre o menino por três vezes, invocando de novo o Senhor: Senhor, meu Deus, rogo-vos que a alma deste menino volte a ele. O Senhor ouviu a oração de Elias: a alma do menino voltou a ele, e ele recuperou a vida. Elias tomou o menino, desceu do quarto superior ao interior da casa e entregou-o à mãe, dizendo: Vê: teu filho vive. A mulher exclamou: Agora vejo que és um homem de Deus e que a palavra de Deus está verdadeiramente em teus lábios.

Evangelho (Jo 11, 1-45)

Naquele tempo, Lázaro caiu doente em Betânia, onde estavam Maria e sua irmã Marta. Maria era quem ungira o Senhor com o óleo perfumado e lhe enxugara os pés com os seus cabelos. E Lázaro, que estava enfermo, era seu irmão. Suas irmãs mandaram, pois, dizer a Jesus: Senhor, aquele que tu amas está enfermo. A estas palavras, disse-lhes Jesus: Esta enfermidade não causará a morte, mas tem por finalidade a glória de Deus. Por ela será glorificado o Filho de Deus. Ora, Jesus amava Marta, Maria, sua irmã, e Lázaro. Mas, embora tivesse ouvido que ele estava enfermo, demorou-se ainda dois dias no mesmo lugar. Depois, disse a seus discípulos: Voltemos para a Judéia. Mestre, responderam eles, há pouco os judeus te queriam apedrejar, e voltas para lá? Jesus respondeu: Não são doze as horas do dia? Quem caminha de dia não tropeça, porque vê a luz deste mundo. Mas quem anda de noite tropeça, porque lhe falta a luz.
Depois destas palavras, ele acrescentou: Lázaro, nosso amigo, dorme, mas vou despertá-lo. Disseram-lhe os seus discípulos: Senhor, se ele dorme, há de sarar. Jesus, entretanto, falara da sua morte, mas eles pensavam que falasse do sono como tal. Então Jesus lhes declarou abertamente: Lázaro morreu.  Alegro-me por vossa causa, por não ter estado lá, para que creiais. Mas vamos a ele. A isso Tomé, chamado Dídimo, disse aos seus condiscípulos: Vamos também nós, para morrermos com ele. À chegada de Jesus, já havia quatro dias que Lázaro estava no sepulcro. Ora, Betânia distava de Jerusalém cerca de quinze estádios. Muitos judeus tinham vindo a Marta e a Maria, para lhes apresentar condolências pela morte de seu irmão. Mal soube Marta da vinda de Jesus, saiu-lhe ao encontro. Maria, porém, estava sentada em casa. Marta disse a Jesus: Senhor, se tivesses estado aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido! Mas sei também, agora, que tudo o que pedires a Deus, Deus to concederá. Disse-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão ressurgirá. Respondeu-lhe Marta: Sei que há de ressurgir na ressurreição no último dia. Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. Aquele que crê em mim, ainda que esteja morto, viverá. E todo aquele que vive e crê em mim, jamais morrerá. Crês nisto? Respondeu ela: Sim, Senhor. Eu creio que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, aquele que devia vir ao mundo. A essas palavras, ela foi chamar sua irmã Maria, dizendo-lhe baixinho: O Mestre está aí e te chama. Apenas ela o ouviu, levantou-se imediatamente e foi ao encontro dele. (Pois Jesus não tinha chegado à aldeia, mas estava ainda naquele lugar onde Marta o tinha encontrado.) Os judeus que estavam com ela em casa, em visita de pêsames, ao verem Maria levantar-se depressa e sair, seguiram-na, crendo que ela ia ao sepulcro para ali chorar. Quando, porém, Maria chegou onde Jesus estava e o viu, lançou-se aos seus pés e disse-lhe: Senhor, se tivesses estado aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido! Ao vê-la chorar assim, como também todos os judeus que a acompanhavam, Jesus ficou intensamente comovido em espírito. E, sob o impulso de profunda emoção, perguntou: Onde o pusestes? Responderam-lhe: Senhor, vinde ver. Jesus pôs-se a chorar. Observaram por isso os judeus: Vede como ele o amava! Mas alguns deles disseram: Não podia ele, que abriu os olhos do cego de nascença, fazer com que este não morresse? Tomado, novamente, de profunda emoção, Jesus foi ao sepulcro. Era uma gruta, coberta por uma pedra. Jesus ordenou: Tirai a pedra. Disse-lhe Marta, irmã do morto: Senhor, já cheira mal, pois há quatro dias que ele está aí… Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Não te disse eu: Se creres, verás a glória de Deus? Tiraram, pois, a pedra. Levantando Jesus os olhos ao alto, disse: Pai, rendo-te graças, porque me ouviste. Eu bem sei que sempre me ouves, mas falo assim por causa do povo que está em roda, para que creiam que tu me enviaste. Depois destas palavras, exclamou em alta voz: Lázaro, vem para fora! E o morto saiu, tendo os pés e as mãos ligados com faixas, e o rosto coberto por um sudário. Ordenou então Jesus: Desligai-o e deixai-o ir. Muitos dos judeus, que tinham vindo a Marta e Maria e viram o que Jesus fizera, creram nele.

Lesson (II King 17: 17-24)

Lesson from the Book of Kings.

In those days: The son of the woman of. the house fell sick, and the sickness was very grievous, so that there was no breath left in him. And she said to Elias: What have I to do with thee, thou man of God? art thou come to me that my iniquities should be remembered, and that thou shouldst kill my son? And Elias said to her: Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him into the upper chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. And he cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, hast Thou also afflicted the widow, with whom I am after a sort maintained, so as to kill her son? And he stretched, and measured himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, let the soul of this child, I beseech Thee, return into his body. And the Lord heard the voice of Elias: and the soul of the child returned unto him, and he revived. And Elias took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber to the house below, and delivered him to his mother, and said to her: Behold thy son liveth. And the woman said to Elias: Now, by this I know that thou art a man of God, and the word of the Lord in thy mouth is true.

Gospel (John 11: 1-45)

The continuation of the holy Gospel according to John. 

At that time, there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and of Martha her sister. (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair; whose brother Lazarus was sick). His sisters therefore sent to Him, saying, Lord, behold he whom Thou lovest is sick. And Jesus hearing it said to them, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” Now, Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He still remained in the same place two days. Then after that, He said to His disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.” The disciples say to Him, Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone Thee; and goest Thou thither again? Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: but if he walk in the night he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.” These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.” His disciples therefore said, Lord, if he sleep he shall do well; but Jesus spoke of his death, and they thought that He spoke of the repose of sleep.Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead; and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.” Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow-disciples, Let us also go that we may die with Him. Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave. (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off). And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Martha, therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus was come, went to meet Him: but Mary sat at home. Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But now also I know that whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it Thee. Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith to Him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, although he be dead, shall live; and every one, that liveth and believeth in Me, shall not die forever. Believest thou this? She saith to Him, Yea, Lord, I have believed, that Thou are Christ, the Son of the living God, Who art come into this world. And when she had said these things she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to Him. For Jesus was not yet come into the town, but He was still in that place where Martha had met Him. The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily, and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth to the grave to weep there. When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell down at His feet, and saith to Him, Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Jesus therefore, when He saw, her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled Himself; and said, “where have you laid him?” They say to Him, Lord, come and see. And Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said, Behold how He loved him! But some of them said, Could not He that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die? Jesus therefore again groaning in Himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave: and a stone was laid over it. Jesus saith, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to Him, Lord, by this time he stinketh; for he is now of four days. Jesus saith to her, “Did not I say to thee that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?” They took therefore the stone away: and Jesus lifting up His eyes, said, “Father, I give Thee thanks that Thou hast heard Me; and I knew that Thou hearest Me always,but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” When He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding-bands, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them. “Loose him, and let him go.” Many therefore of the Jews who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in Him.
