QUARTA-FEIRA DA 3ª SEMANA DA QUARESMA

A estação de hoje reunia-se em São Sisto na Via Apia. Dizem algum que foi neste lugar que São Lourenço, cheio de respeito e deferência para com o sucesso de São Pedro, pediu ao Papa São Sixto a graça de acompanhar como ministro do sacrifício que o glorioso Pontífice, condenado a morte ia celebrar.
Os pagãos inscritos neste dia do catecumenato começavam a assistir até a Páscoa a doutrina da Igreja, expressa na parte da missa chamada de “missa dos catecúmenos”. Assim a Epístola e o Evangelho recordam as prescrições do Decálogo e da pureza da intenção e da lealdade exigida para a reta observância dos mandamentos de Deus. Só o cenário da promulgação no Monte Sinai é o bastante por si só para nos incutir uma grande idéia deles. Mas confirmado e renovados por Cristo no espírito interior alcançaram ainda maior amplitude. Os judeus haviam adicionado ao Decálogo tradições exclusivamente humanas, consistindo em formalidades meramente exteriores, a que davam maior importância que a própria lei de Moisés. O Senhor condena este proceder e a Igreja procura por-nos de guarda para o perigo de nos perdermos na observância de práticas e ritos exteriores a que não corresponde com o espirito interior da caridade. É com efeito necessário que a nossa penitência, para que possa agradar a Deus, proceda de um coração a transbordar de amor de Deus e do próximo, porque é de lá que provém o mérito ou demérito das obras humanas. Por isso a mortificação corporal tenhamos grande cuidado de juntar a prática das virtudes.

Oração (Coleta da Missa): Fazei, Senhor, nós Vos suplicamos, que instruídos por estes jejuns salutares e nos afastando também dos vícios nocivos, obtenhamos mais facilmente o vosso perdão. Por Nosso senhor Jesus Cristo. Amém.

Oração (Super populum): Concedei, Vos pedimos, ó Deus, que, procurando a graça de vossa proteção, sejamos livres de todos os males e Vos sirvamos com a alma tranquila. Por Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. Amém.

Leitura (Ex 20, 12-24)

Leitura do Livro do Êxodo.

Assim disse o Senhor Deus: Honra teu pai e tua mãe, para que teus dias se prolonguem sobre a terra que te dá o Senhor, teu Deus. Não matarás. Não cometerás adultério. Não furtarás. Não levantarás falso testemunho contra teu próximo. Não cobiçarás a casa do teu próximo; não cobiçarás a mulher do teu próximo, nem seu escravo, nem sua escrava, nem seu boi, nem seu jumento, nem nada do que lhe pertence.” Diante dos trovões, das chamas, da voz da trombeta e do monte que fumegava, o povo tremia e conservava-se à distância. E disseram a Moisés: “Fala-nos tu mesmo, e te ouviremos; mas não nos fale Deus, para que não morramos.” Moisés respondeu-lhes: “Não temais, porque é para vos provar que Deus veio e para que o seu temor, sempre presente aos vossos olhos, vos preserve de pecar”. E o povo conservou-se à distância, enquanto Moisés se aproximava da nuvem onde se encontrava Deus. O Senhor disse a Moisés: “Eis o que dirás aos israelitas: vistes que vos falei dos céus. Não fareis deuses de prata, nem deuses de ouro para pôr ao meu lado. Tu me levantarás um altar de terra, sobre o qual oferecerás teus holocaustos e teus sacrifícios pacíficos, tuas ovelhas e teus bois. Em todo lugar onde eu fizer recordar o meu nome, virei a ti para te abençoar.

Evangelho (Mt 15, 1-20)

Naquele tempo: Alguns fariseus e escribas de Jerusalém vieram um dia ter com Jesus e lhe disseram: Por que transgridem teus discípulos a tradição dos antigos? Nem mesmo lavam as mãos antes de comer. Jesus respondeu-lhes: E vós, por que violais os preceitos de Deus, por causa de vossa tradição? Deus disse: Honra teu pai e tua mãe; aquele que amaldiçoar seu pai ou sua mãe será castigado de morte (Ex 20,12; 21,17). Mas vós dizeis: Aquele que disser a seu pai ou a sua mãe: aquilo com que eu vos poderia assistir, já oferecia Deus, esse já não é obrigado a socorrer de outro modo a seus pais. Assim, por causa de vossa tradição, anulais a palavra de Deus. Hipócritas! É bem de vós que fala o profeta Isaías: Este povo somente me honra com os lábios; seu coração, porém, está longe de mim. Vão é o culto que me prestam, porque ensinam preceitos que só vêm dos homens (Is 29,13). Depois, reuniu os assistentes e disse-lhes: Ouvi e compreendei. Não é aquilo que entra pela boca que mancha o homem, mas aquilo que sai dele. Eis o que mancha o homem. Então se aproximaram dele seus discípulos e disseram-lhe: Sabes que os fariseus se escandalizaram com as palavras que ouviram? Jesus respondeu: Toda planta que meu Pai celeste não plantou será arrancada pela raiz. Deixai-os. São cegos e guias de cegos. Ora, se um cego conduz a outro, tombarão ambos na mesma vala. Tomando então a palavra, Pedro disse: Explica-nos esta parábola. Jesus respondeu: Sois também vós de tão pouca compreensão? Não compreendeis que tudo o que entra pela boca vai ao ventre e depois é lançado num lugar secreto? Ao contrário, aquilo que sai da boca provém do coração, e é isso o que mancha o homem. Porque é do coração que provêm os maus pensamentos, os homicídios, os adultérios, as impurezas, os furtos, os falsos testemunhos, as calúnias. Eis o que mancha o homem. Comer, porém, sem ter lavado as mãos, isso não mancha o homem.

Thus saith the Lord God, Honor thy father and thy mother, that thou mayest be long-lived upon the land which the Lord thy God will give thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house; neither shalt thou desire his wife, nor his servant, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is his. And all the people saw the voices, and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mount smoking: and being terrified and struck with fear, they stood afar off, saying to Moses, Speak thou to us, and we will hear; let not the Lord speak to us, lest we die. And Moses said to the people, Fear not, for God is come to prove you, and that the dread of Him might be in you, and you should not sin. And the people stood afar off’, but Moses went to the dark cloud wherein God was: and the Lord said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. You shall not make gods of silver, nor shall you make to yourselves gods of gold. You shall make an altar of earth unto Me, and you shall offer upon it your holocausts and peace offerings, your sheep and oxen, in every place where the memory of My name shall be.

Gospel (Matt. 15: 1-20)

At that time, the scribes and pharisees came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, Why do Thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But He answering, said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said, Honor thy father and mother; and he that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death. But you say, Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee; and he shall not honor his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying, This people honoreth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me; and in vain do they worship Me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.” And having called together the multitudes unto Him, He said to them, “Hear ye and understand: not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but what cometh out of the mouth, this defìleth a man.” Then came His disciples and said to Him, Dost Thou know that the pharisees, when they heard this word were scandalized? But He answering, said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone, they are blind and leaders of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both fall into the pit.” And expound to us this parable. But He said, “Are you also yet without understanding? do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast into the privy? but the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man: for from the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. These are the things that defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.”
