QUINTA-FEIRA DA 1ª SEMANA DA QUARESMA

Gregório II estabeleceu que a estação de hoje se reunisse na antiga Igreja de São Lourenço de Panisperna, edificada em honra do heroico Diácono, no lugar onde a tradição diz que este sofreu o martírio. Lembra hoje a Igreja pela boca de Ezequiel aos catecúmenos e aos fiéis que tudo pertence a Deus que todos nós podemos nos salvar se praticrmos a justiça eguardarmos os mandamentos do Senhor. O milagre operado em favor da cananéia é uma prova convicente de que o Senhor, enviado primeiramente aos judeus, mas por eles rejeitado, vai voltar-se para os gentios, cuja a fé começa a se revelar.

Leitura (Ez 18, 1-9)

Leitura do Profeta Ezequiel.

Naqueles dias, a palavra do Senhor foi-me dirigida nestes termos: por que repetis continuamente esse provérbio entre os israelitas: os pais comeram uvas verdes, mas são os dentes dos filhos que ficam embotados? Por minha vida – oráculo do Senhor Javé -, não tereis mais ocasião de repetir esse provérbio em Israel. É a mim que pertencem as vidas, a vida do pai e a vida do filho. Ora, é o culpado que morrerá. O homem justo – que procede segundo o direito e a eqüidade, que não participa dos festins das montanhas, que não volve os olhos para os ídolos da casa de Israel, que não desonra a mulher do próximo, e não tem relação com uma mulher durante o tempo de sua impureza, que não oprime ninguém, que restitui o penhor ao seu devedor, que não exerce a rapina, que dá seu pão aos famintos, e cobre com vestimenta o que está nu, que não empresta à taxa usurária e não recebe com juros, que afasta a sua mão da iniqüidade, e julga eqüitativamente entre um homem e outro, que segue os meus preceitos e observa as minhas leis, para proceder com retidão – esse homem é um justo: certamente viverá. Oráculo do Senhor Javé.

Evangelho (Mt 15, 21-28)

Naquele tempo, Jesus partiu de Jerusalém e retirou-se para os arredores de Tiro e Sidônia. E eis que uma cananeia, originária daquela terra, gritava: Senhor, filho de Davi, tem piedade de mim! Minha filha está cruelmente atormentada por um demônio. Jesus não lhe respondeu palavra alguma. Seus discípulos vieram a ele e lhe disseram com insistência: Despede-a, ela nos persegue com seus gritos. Jesus respondeu-lhes: Não fui enviado senão às ovelhas perdidas da casa de Israel. Mas aquela mulher veio prostrar-se diante dele, dizendo: Senhor, ajuda-me! Jesus respondeu-lhe: Não convém jogar aos cachorrinhos o pão dos filhos. Certamente, Senhor, replicou-lhe ela; mas os cachorrinhos ao menos comem as migalhas que caem da mesa de seus donos… Disse-lhe, então, Jesus: Ó mulher, grande é tua fé! Seja-te feito como desejas. E na mesma hora sua filha ficou curada.

Leitura (Ez. 18: 1-9)

Lesson from Ezechiel the Prophet.

In those days, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, What is the meaning that you use among you this parable as a proverb in the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord, this parable shall be no more to you a proverb in Israel. Behold all souls are Mine: as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine: the soul that sinneth, the same shall die. And if a man be just, and do justice, and hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Isræl; and hath not defiled his neighbor’s wife, nor come near to a menstruous woman; and hath not wronged any man, but hath restored the pledge to the debtor; hath taken nothing away by violence; hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; hath not lent upon usury, nor taken any increase; hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, and hath executed true judgment between man and man; hath walked in My commandments, and kept My judgments, to do truth; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord almighty.

Gospel (Matt. 15: 21-28)

At that time, Jesus went forth, and retired into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to Him, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Thou son of David: my daughter is grievously troubled by a devil. Who answered her not a word. And His disciples came and besought Him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth after us: and He answering, said, “I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Isræl.” But she came and adored Him, saying, Lord, help me. Who answering, said, “It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.” But she said, Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters. Then Jesus answering, said to her, “O woman, great is thy faith; be it done to thee as thou wilt”, and her daughter was cured from that hour.
