Os Sete Fundadores dos Servitas

A Ordem dos Servitas ou Servos de Maria foi instituída em 1223, no Monte Senário, perto de Florença. Ali repousam, em sepultura comum, sete Fundadores, que, convidados por Nossa Senhora a uma vida de penitência e perfeição, haviam deixado a vida que gozavam como nobres cidadãos. Distinguem-se eles, como a sua Ordem, por uma grande devoção a Nossa Senhora das Dores.

Sexta-feira depois de Cinzas

A Estação de hoje reunia-se no monte Célio, na casa que fora de São João e São Paulo, que o senador cristão Pamáquio, genro que santa Paula e amigo e São Jerônimo, transformaram no século V em Igreja Paroquial. Seis frascos desta época ainda existem, apresentam várias cenas da morte e do cativeiro destes dois romanos que a mesma fé e o martírio tornou ainda mais irmãos. Perto desta Igreja se encontra o albergue dos peregrinos Xenodóquio Valeril; Pamaquio distribuiu sua fortuna com os pobres e o Evangelho aludem a sua caridade, a Epístola e o Evangelho ensina-nos que as obras externas de penitência, se não forem acompanhadas do espírito de sacrifício, não valem nada aos olhos de Deus. E este espírito revela-se nas obras de misericórdia praticadas sem distinção com todos os homens e animadas da intenção, não para guardar um diploma das obras feitas, ms de agradar unicamente a Deus e socorrer a necessidade, peçamos a Deus o espírito de sacrifício e misericórdia.

Epístola (Is 58, 1-9)

Leitura do Profeta Isaías.

Eis o que diz o Senhor: Clama em alta voz, sem constrangimento; faze soar a tua voz como a corneta. Denuncia a meu povo suas faltas, e à casa de Jacó seus pecados. Sem dúvida eles me procuram dia após dia, desejam conhecer o comportamento que me agrada, como uma nação que houvesse sempre praticado a justiça, sem abandonar a lei de seu Deus. Informam-se junto a mim sobre as exigências da justiça, desejam a presença de Deus. De que serve jejuar, se com isso não vos importais? E mortificar-nos, se nisso não prestais atenção? É que no dia de vosso jejum, só cuidais de vossos negócios, e oprimis todos os vossos operários. Passais vosso jejum em disputas e altercações, ferindo com o punho o pobre. Não é jejuando assim que fareis chegar lá em cima vossa voz. O jejum que me agrada porventura consiste em o homem mortificar-se por um dia? Curvar a cabeça como um junco, deitar sobre o saco e a cinza? Podeis chamar isso um jejum, um dia agradável ao Senhor? Sabeis qual é o jejum que eu aprecio? – diz o Senhor Deus: É romper as cadeias injustas, desatar as cordas do jugo, mandar embora livres os oprimidos, e quebrar toda espécie de jugo. É repartir seu alimento com o esfaimado, dar abrigo aos infelizes sem asilo, vestir os maltrapilhos, em lugar de desviar-se de seu semelhante. Então tua luz surgirá como a aurora, e tuas feridas não tardarão a cicatrizar-se; tua justiça caminhará diante de ti, e a glória do Senhor seguirá na tua retaguarda. Então às tuas invocações, o Senhor responderá, e a teus gritos dirá: Eis-me aqui! Se expulsares de tua casa toda a opressão, os gestos malévolos e as más conversações;

Evangelho (Mt 5, 43-48; 6, 1-4)

Naquele tem disse Jesus: Tendes ouvido o que foi dito: Amarás o teu próximo e poderás odiar teu inimigo. Eu, porém, vos digo: amai vossos inimigos, fazei bem aos que vos odeiam, orai pelos que vos [maltratam e] perseguem. Deste modo sereis os filhos de vosso Pai do céu, pois ele faz nascer o sol tanto sobre os maus como sobre os bons, e faz chover sobre os justos e sobre os injustos. Se amais somente os que vos amam, que recompensa tereis? Não fazem assim os próprios publicanos? Se saudais apenas vossos irmãos, que fazeis de extraordinário? Não fazem isto também os pagãos? Portanto, sede perfeitos, assim como vosso Pai celeste é perfeito. Guardai-vos de fazer vossas boas obras diante dos homens, para serdes vistos por eles. Do contrário, não tereis recompensa junto de vosso Pai que está no céu. Quando, pois, dás esmola, não toques a trombeta diante de ti, como fazem os hipócritas nas sinagogas e nas ruas, para serem louvados pelos homens. Em verdade eu vos digo: já receberam sua recompensa. Quando deres esmola, que tua mão esquerda não saiba o que fez a direita. Assim, a tua esmola se fará em segredo; e teu Pai, que vê o escondido, recompensar-te-á.

Epistle (Is. 58: 1-9)

Lesson from Isaias the Prophet.

Thus saith the Lord God: Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins. For they seek Me from day to day, and desire to know My ways, as a nation that hath done justice, and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God: they ask of Me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God. Why have we fasted, and Thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and Thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found, and you exact of all your debtors. Behold you fast for debates and strife, and strike with the fist wickedly. Do not fast as you have done until this day to make your cry to be heard on high. Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? Is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? Wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this rather the fast that I have chosen? Loose the bands of wickedness, undo the bundles that oppress, let them that are broken go free, and break asunder every burden. Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the harborless into thy house; when thou shalt see one naked, cover him, and despise not thy own flesh. Then shall thy light break forth as the morning and thy health shall speedily arise, and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the glory of the Lord shall gather thee up. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall hear: thou shalt cry, and He shall say: Here I am. Because I the Lord thy God am merciful.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: “You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy. But I say to you love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you: that you may be the children of your Father Who is in Heaven, Who maketh His sun to rise upon the good and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust. For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? Do not even the publicans this? And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? Do not also the heathens this? Be ye therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect. Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father Who is in Heaven. Therefore when thou dost an almsdeed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth, that thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father Who seeth in secret will repay thee.”
