Leitura do livro de Tobias (Tob 12, 7-15)

Se é bom conservar escondido o segredo do rei, é coisa louvável revelar e publicar as obras de Deus.Boa coisa é a oração acompanhada de jejum, e a esmola é preferível aos tesouros de ouro escondidos, porque a esmola livra da morte: ela apaga os pecados e faz encontrar a misericórdia e a vida eterna; aqueles, porém, que praticam a injustiça e o pecado são os seus próprios inimigos. Vou descobrir-vos a verdade, sem nada vos ocultar. Quando tu oravas com lágrimas e enterravas os mortos, quando deixavas a tua refeição e ias ocultar os mortos em tua casa durante o dia, para sepultá-los quando viesse a noite, eu apresentava as tuas orações ao Senhor. Mas porque eras agradável ao Senhor, foi preciso que a tentação te provasse. Agora o Senhor enviou-me para curar-te e livrar do demônio Sara, mulher de teu filho. Eu sou o anjo Rafael, um dos sete que assistimos na presença do Senhor.

Lesson from the Book of Tobias.

In those days, the angel Raphael said to Tobias: It is good to hide the secret of a king: but honorable to reveal and confess the works of God. Prayer is good with fasting and alms, more than to lay up treasures of gold: for alms delívereth from death, and the same is that which purgeth away sins, and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting. But they that commit sin and iniquity are enemies to their own soul. I discover then the truth unto you, and I will not hide the secret from you. When thou didst pray with tears, and didst bury the dead, and didst leave thy dinner, and hide the dead by day in thy house, and bury them by night, I offered thy prayer to the Lord. And because thou wert acceptable to God, it was necessary that temptation should prove thee. And now the Lord hath sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sara thy son’s wife from the devil. For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord.

In diébus illis: Dixit Angelus Ráphaél ad Tobíam: Sacraméntum regis abscóndere bonum est: ópera autem Dei reveláre et confitéri honoríficum est: Bona est orátio cum jejúnio, et eleemósyna magis quam thesáuros auri recóndere: quóniam eleemósyna a morte líberat, et ipsa est, quæ purgat peccáta, et facit inveníre misericórdiam et vitam ætérnam. Qui autem fáciunt peccátum, et iniquitátem, hostes sunt ánimæ suæ. Manifésto ergo vobis veritátem, et non abscóndam a vobis occúltum sermónem. Quando orábas cum lácrymis, et sepeliébas mórtuos, et dere­linquébas prándium tuum, et mórtuos abscondébas per diem in domo tua, et nocte sepeliébas eos, ego óbtuli oratiónem tuam Dómino. Et quia accéptus eras Deo, necésse fuit ut tentátio probéret te. Et nunc misit me Dóminus ut curárem te, et Saram uxórem fílii tui a dæmónio liberárem. Ego enim sum Ráphaël Angelus, unus ex septem, qui adstámus ante Dóminum.

Sequência do Santo Evangelho segundo João (Jo 5, 1-4)

Naquele tempo, em dia da festa dos judeus, subiu Jesus a Jerusalém. Ora, há em Jerusalém, junto à porta das Ovelhas, um tanque, chamado em hebraico Betesda, que tem cinco pórticos. Nestes pórticos jazia um grande número de enfermos, de cegos, de coxos e de paralíticos, que esperavam o movimento da água. Pois de tempos em tempos um anjo do Senhor descia ao tanque e a água se punha em movimento. E o primeiro que entrasse no tanque, depois da agitação da água, ficava curado de qualquer doença que tivesse.

The continuation of the Holy Gospel acording to St. John (Jo 15, 1-4)

At that time, there was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethseda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered, waiting for the moving of the water. And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond: and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.

In illo témpore: Erat dies festus Judæórum, et ascéndit Jesus Jerosólymam. Est autem. Jerosólymis Probática piscina, quæ cognominátur Hebráice Bethsáida, quinque pórticus habens. In his jacébat multitúdo magna languéntium, cæcórum, claudórum, aridórum expectántium aquæ motum. Angelus autem Dómini descendébat secúndum tempus in piscínam, et movebátur aqua. Et qui prior descendísset in piscínam post motiónem aquæ, sanus fiébat, a quacúmque detinebátur infirmitáte.
