QUINTA-FEIRA DA SEMANA DA PAIXÃO

A estação de hoje reunia-se na Igreja de São Apolinário, construída n pontificado do Papa Adriano I à volta de 780.
Daniel fala-nos da humilhação de Israel que foi entregue nas mãos do inimigo por causa de seu pecado. A Igreja por seu lado lamenta a má conduta de muito de seus filhos e dos Gentios que vivem contentes de mãos dadas com o demônio e com os vícios, inconsistentes do perigo que os ameaça, e pede com Azarias ao Senhor que confunda os que tratam mal os seus servos, porque é humilhados e contritos pela dor e que eles vem procurar a misericórdia de Deus. E espera confia que o Senhor multiplique o seu povo como as estrelas do Céu numa visão palpitante da noite apoteótica da Páscoa. Depois no Evangelho procura enfatizar-nos à penitência e incutir-nos com o exemplo de Madalena a esperança do Perdão e duma vida nova conforma a do Filho de Deus. Choremos pois nossos pecados e choremos como Madalena, ungiu com boas obras os pés do Senhor cansado de nos buscar.

Leitura (Dn 3, 25. 34-45)

Leitura do profeta Daniel.

Naqueles dias: Azarias, em pé bem no meio do fogo, fez a seguinte oração: Pelo amor de vosso nome, não nos abandoneis para sempre; não destruais de modo algum vossa aliança. Não nos retireis vossa misericórdia em consideração a Abraão, vosso amigo, Isaac, vosso servo, Israel, vosso santo, aos quais prometestes multiplicar sua descendência como as estrelas do céu e a areia que se encontra à beira do mar. Senhor, fomos reduzidos a nada diante das nações, fomos humilhados diante de toda a terra: tudo, devido a nossos pecados! Hoje, já não há príncipe, nem profeta, nem chefe, nem holocausto, nem sacrifício, nem oblação, nem incenso, nem mesmo um lugar para vos oferecer nossas primícias e encontrar misericórdia. Entretanto, que a contrição de nosso coração e a humilhação de nosso espírito nos permita achar bom acolhimento junto a vós, Senhor, como (se nós nos apresentássemos) com um holocausto de carneiros, de touros e milhares de gordos cordeiros! Que assim possa ser hoje o nosso sacrifício em vossa presença! Que possa (reconciliar-nos) convosco, porque nenhuma confusão existe para aqueles que põem em vós sua confiança. É de todo nosso coração que nós vos seguimos agora, que nós vos reverenciamos, que buscamos vossa face. Não nos confundais; tratai-nos com vossa habitual doçura e com todas as riquezas de vossa misericórdia. Ponde em execução vossos prodígios para nos salvar, Senhor, e cobri vosso nome de glória. Que sejam então confundidos aqueles que maltratam vossos servos, que eles sofram a vergonha de ver a ruína de seu poderio e o aniquilamento de sua força. Assim saberão que sois o Senhor, o Deus único e glorioso sobre toda a superfície da terra.

Evangelho (Lc 7, 36-50)

Naquele Tempo, Um fariseu convidou Jesus a ir comer com ele. Jesus entrou na casa dele e pôs-se à mesa. Uma mulher pecadora da cidade, quando soube que estava à mesa em casa do fariseu, trouxe um vaso de alabastro cheio de perfume; e, estando a seus pés, por detrás dele, começou a chorar. Pouco depois suas lágrimas banhavam os pés do Senhor e ela os enxugava com os cabelos, beijava-os e os ungia com o perfume. Ao presenciar isto, o fariseu, que o tinha convidado, dizia consigo mesmo: Se este homem fosse profeta, bem saberia quem e qual é a mulher que o toca, pois é pecadora. Então Jesus lhe disse: Simão, tenho uma coisa a dizer-te. Fala, Mestre, disse ele. Um credor tinha dois devedores: um lhe devia quinhentos denários e o outro, cinqüenta. Não tendo eles com que pagar, perdoou a ambos a sua dívida. Qual deles o amará mais? Simão respondeu: A meu ver, aquele a quem ele mais perdoou. Jesus replicou-lhe: Julgaste bem. E voltando-se para a mulher, disse a Simão: Vês esta mulher? Entrei em tua casa e não me deste água para lavar os pés; mas esta, com as suas lágrimas, regou-me os pés e enxugou-os com os seus cabelos. Não me deste o ósculo; mas esta, desde que entrou, não cessou de beijar-me os pés. Não me ungiste a cabeça com óleo; mas esta, com perfume, ungiu-me os pés. Por isso te digo: seus numerosos pecados lhe foram perdoados, porque ela tem demonstrado muito amor. Mas ao que pouco se perdoa, pouco ama. E disse a ela: Perdoados te são os pecados. Os que estavam com ele à mesa começaram a dizer, então: Quem é este homem que até perdoa pecados? Mas Jesus, dirigindo-se à mulher, disse-lhe: Tua fé te salvou; vai em paz.

Lesson from the Prophet Daniel.

In that time, Azarias standing up, prayed in this manner, and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire, he said: Deliver us not up for ever, we beseech Thee, for Thy name’s sake, and abolish not Thy covenant. And take not away Thy mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham, Thy beloved, and Isaac, Thy servant, and Israel, Thy holy one: To whom Thou hast spoken, promising that Thou wouldst multiply their seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is on the sea shore. For we, O Lord, are diminished more than any nation, and are brought low in all the earth this day for our sins. Neither is there at this time prince, or leader, or prophet, or holocaust, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, or place of first fruits before thee, That we may find thy mercy: nevertheless, in a contrite heart and humble spirit let us be accepted. As in holocausts of rams, and bullocks, and as in thousands of fat lambs: so let our sacrifice be made in thy sight this day, that it may please Thee: for there is no confusion to them that trust in Thee. And now we follow thee with all our heart, and we fear Thee, and seek Thy face. Put us not to confusion, but deal with us according to Thy meekness, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies. Gospel (Luke 7: 36-50)

At that time one of the Pharisees desired Jesus to eat with him. And He went into the house of the Pharisee and sat down to meat. And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that He sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment. And standing behind at His feet, she began to wash His feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head and kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment. And the Pharisee, who had invited Him, seeing it, spoke within Himself, saying: This man, if He were a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth Him, that she is a sinner. And Jesus answering, said to him: “Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee.” But he said: “Master, say it.” “A certain creditor had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence and the other fifty. And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most?” Simon answering, said: “I suppose that he to whom he forgave most.” And He said to him: “Thou hast judged rightly.” And turning to the woman, He said unto Simon: “Dost thou see this woman? I entered into thy house: thou gavest Me no water for My feet. But she with tears hath washed My feet; and with her hairs hath wiped them. Thou gavest Me no kiss. But she, since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss My feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint. But she with ointment hath anointed My feet. Wherefore, I say to thee: Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. But to whom less is forgiven, he loveth less.” And He said to her: “Thy sins are forgiven thee.” And they that sat at meat with Him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And He said to the woman: “Thy faith hath made thee safe. Go in peace.”
