São Jerônimo nasceu na Dalmácia em 329. Mesmo durante sua vida, ele era conhecido como um doutor e intérprete da Sagrada Escritura. Defendeu a doutrina Católica contra muitas heresias; seu objetivo principal era para ser um monge perfeito e antes que ele consentisse em ser elevado ao sacerdócio exigiu uma promessa de Paulino, o Bispo de Antioquia, que esta nova dignidade não deveria, de modo algum, interferir com a sua vocação monástica. A ele devemos a tradução das Sagradas Escrituras, a introdução do canto alleluiatic na missa dominical, a propagação da vida monástica entre a aristocracia, e por último a recitação diária do Ofício Divino. Depois de realizar serviços importantes para o Papa de sua época, São Jerônimo retirou-se para Belém, onde morreu em 30 de setembro de 420.

Epístola (II Tim 4, 1-8 )
Leitura da Segunda Carta de São Paulo Apóstolo a Timóteo.
Caríssimo, eu te conjuro em presença de Deus e de Jesus Cristo, que há de julgar os vivos e os mortos, por sua aparição e por seu Reino: prega a palavra, insiste oportuna e importunamente, repreende, ameaça, exorta com toda paciência e empenho de instruir. Porque virá tempo em que os homens já não suportarão a sã doutrina da salvação. Levados pelas próprias paixões e pelo prurido de escutar novidades, ajustarão mestres para si. Apartarão os ouvidos da verdade e se atirarão às fábulas. Tu, porém, sê prudente em tudo, paciente nos sofrimentos, cumpre a missão de pregador do Evangelho, consagra-te ao teu ministério. Quanto a mim, estou a ponto de ser imolado e o instante da minha libertação se aproxima. Combati o bom combate, terminei a minha carreira, guardei a fé. Resta-me agora receber a coroa da justiça, que o Senhor, justo Juiz, me dará naquele dia, e não somente a mim, mas a todos aqueles que aguardam com amor a sua aparição.
Evangelho (Mt 5, 13-19)

Naquele tempo, disse Jesus a seus discípulos: Vós sois o sal da terra. Se o sal perde o sabor, com que lhe será restituído o sabor? Para nada mais serve senão para ser lançado fora e calcado pelos homens. Vós sois a luz do mundo. Não se pode esconder uma cidade situada sobre uma montanha nem se acende uma luz para colocá-la debaixo do alqueire, mas sim para colocá-la sobre o candeeiro, a fim de que brilhe a todos os que estão em casa. Assim, brilhe vossa luz diante dos homens, para que vejam as vossas boas obras e glorifiquem vosso Pai que está nos céus. Não julgueis que vim abolir a lei ou os profetas. Não vim para os abolir, mas sim para levá-los à perfeição. Pois em verdade vos digo: passará o céu e a terra, antes que desapareça um jota, um traço da lei. Aquele que violar um destes mandamentos, por menor que seja, e ensinar assim aos homens, será declarado o menor no Reino dos céus. Mas aquele que os guardar e os ensinar será declarado grande no Reino dos céus.

Epistle (II Tim. 4: 1-8)
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy.
Dearly beloved, I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and His Kingdom. Preach the word: be instant in season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience, and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed; and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day; and not only to me, but to them also that love His coming.
Gospel (Matt 5: 13-19)

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: “You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain can not be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house; so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For, amen I say unto you, till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall not pass of the law till all be fulfilled.He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men,shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven: but he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.”
