São Januário e seus Companheiros mártires foram martirizados durante a perseguição de Diocleciano. São Januário, padroeiro da cidade de Nápoles e bispo de Beneventum , foi decapitado com seus diáconos e alguns outros. Na grande igreja em Nápoles são preservados um pouco do sangue de São Januário (também chamado de St. Gennaro ) em dois frascos de vidro, e também a cabeça. O sangue é congelado , mas a cada ano até o presente, ele se liquefaz quando colocado perto da cabeça do mártir. Este milagre foi verificado tanto por cientistas quanto por muitas pessoas piedosas e aprendidas . O cardeal Schuster, Arcebispo de Milão, foi capaz de observá-lo de perto e, como outros que estudaram isso, foi obrigado a confessar que não parece haver nenhuma explicação possível natural deste evento. Pode ser que desta forma Deus tem o prazer de mostrar ao povo de Nápoles que o sangue de seu grande Padroeiro ainda está ativo e poderoso aos olhos do Senhor, e também que, para com Deus, não há passado, mas tudo está presente e vive à Sua vista.

Epístola (Heb. 10,32-38)
Leitura da Epístola de São Paulo Apóstolo aos Hebreus.
Irmãos: Lembrai-vos dos dias de outrora, logo que fostes iluminados. Quão longas e dolorosas lutas sustentastes. Seja tornando-vos alvo de toda espécie de opróbrios e humilhações, seja tomando moralmente parte nos sofrimentos daqueles que os tiveram que suportar. Não só vos compadecestes dos encarcerados, mas aceitastes com alegria a confiscação dos vossos bens, pela certeza de possuirdes riquezas muito melhores e imperecíveis. Não percais esta convicção a que está vinculada uma grande recompensa, pois vos é necessária a perseverança para fazerdes a vontade de Deus e alcançardes os bens prometidos. Ainda um pouco de tempo – sem dúvida, bem pouco -, e o que há de vir virá e não tardará. Meu justo viverá da fé. Porém, se ele desfalecer, meu coração já não se agradará dele (Hab 2,3s).

Naquele tempo, indo Jesus assentar-se no monte das Oliveiras, achegaram-se os discípulos e, estando a sós com ele, perguntaram-lhe: Quando acontecerá isto? E qual será o sinal de tua volta e do fim do mundo? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Cuidai que ninguém vos seduza. Muitos virão em meu nome, dizendo: Sou eu o Cristo. E seduzirão a muitos. Ouvireis falar de guerras e de rumores de guerra. Atenção: que isso não vos perturbe, porque é preciso que isso aconteça. Mas ainda não será o fim. Levantar-se-á nação contra nação, reino contra reino, e haverá fome, peste e grandes desgraças em diversos lugares. Tudo isto será apenas o início das dores. Então sereis entregues aos tormentos, matar-vos-ão e sereis por minha causa objeto de ódio para todas as nações. Muitos sucumbirão, trair-se-ão mutuamente e mutuamente se odiarão. Levantar-se-ão muitos falsos profetas e seduzirão a muitos. E, ante o progresso crescente da iniquidade, a caridade de muitos esfriará. Entretanto, aquele que perseverar até o fim será salvo.

Brethren, call to mind the former days, wherein, being illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions. And on the one hand indeed, by reproaches and tribulations were made a gazingstock; and on the other, become companions of them that were used in such sort. For you both had compassion on them that were in bands, and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods, knowing that you have a better and lasting substance. Do not therefore lose your confidence, which hath a great reward. For patience is necessary for you: that doing the will of God you may receive the promise. For yet a little and a very little while, and He that is to come, will come and will not delay. But my just man liveth by faith.
Gospel (Matt. 24: 3-13)

In that time, when he was seated at the Mount of Olives, the disciples drew near to him privately, saying: “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of your advent and of the consummation of the age?” And answering, Jesus said to them: “Pay attention, lest someone lead you astray. For many will come in my name saying, ‘I am the Christ.’ And they will lead many astray. For you will hear of battles and rumors of battles. Take care not to be disturbed. For these things must be, but the end is not so soon. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be pestilences, and famines, and earthquakes in places. But all these things are just the beginning of the sorrows. Then they will hand you over to tribulation, and they will kill you. And you will be hated by all nations for the sake of my name. And then many will be led into sin, and will betray one another, and will have hatred for one another. And many false prophets will arise, and they will lead many astray. And because iniquity has abounded, the charity of many will grow cold. But whoever will have persevered until the end, the same shall be saved.
