A leitura de Oséias recorda-nos as palavras que este profeta dirigiu a Israel: “Converte-te, Israel, ao teu Deus e Senhor, porque te perderes por causa da sua iniqüidade” e a promessa que o Senhor afastará a sua ira dos israelitas se fizerem penitência. Uma formosa colheita de azeite, de vinho e de trigo, os produtos da estação outonal (hemisfério norte), consagrados ao Senhor nas têmporas de Setembro, são os símbolos das promessas que Deus, fez ao povo, de abundantes bênçãos. E o que Deus fez com Israel penitente, fez o Salvador com Maria Madalena, a quem muito foi perdoado porque muito amou.

Leitura (Os 14, 2-9)
Leitura do livro de Oseias.
Muni-vos de palavras (de súplicas) e voltai ao Senhor. Dizei-lhe: Perdoai todos os nossos pecados, acolheinos favoravelmente. Queremos oferecer em sacrifício a homenagem de nossos lábios. O assírio não nos salvará, não mais montaremos nossos cavalos, e não mais teremos como Deus obra alguma de nossas mãos, porque só junto de vós encontra o órfão compaixão. Curarei a sua infidelidade, amá-los-ei de todo o coração, (porque minha cólera apartou-se deles). Serei para Israel como o orvalho; ele florescerá como o lírio, e lançará raízes como o álamo. Seus galhos estender-se-ão ao longe, sua opulência igualará à da oliveira e seu perfume será como o odor do Líbano. (Os de Efraim) virão sentar-se à sua sombra. Cultivarão o trigo. Crescerão com a vinha. E serão famosos como o vinho do Líbano. Que terá ainda Efraim de comum com os ídolos? Eu mesmo, que o afligi, torná-lo-ei feliz. Eu sou como o cipreste sempre verde: graças a mim é que produzes fruto. Quem é sábio atenda a estas coisas! Que o homem inteligente reflita nelas, porque os caminhos do Senhor são retos. Os justos andam por eles, mas os pecadores neles tropeçam.
Evangelho (Lc 7, 36-50)
Sequência do Santo Evangelho segundo Lucas.
Naquele tempo: Um fariseu convidou Jesus a ir comer com ele. Jesus entrou na casa dele e pôs-se à mesa. Uma mulher pecadora da cidade, quando soube que estava à mesa em casa do fariseu, trouxe um vaso de alabastro cheio de perfume; e, estando a seus pés, por detrás dele, começou a chorar. Pouco depois suas lágrimas banhavam os pés do Senhor e ela os enxugava com os cabelos, beijava-os e os ungia com o perfume. Ao presenciar isto, o fariseu, que o tinha convidado, dizia consigo mesmo: Se este homem fosse profeta, bem saberia quem e qual é a mulher que o toca, pois é pecadora. Então Jesus lhe disse: Simão, tenho uma coisa a dizer-te. Fala, Mestre, disse ele. Um credor tinha dois devedores: um lhe devia quinhentos denários e o outro, cinqüenta. Não tendo eles com que pagar, perdoou a ambos a sua dívida. Qual deles o amará mais? Simão respondeu: A meu ver, aquele a quem ele mais perdoou. Jesus replicou-lhe: Julgaste bem. E voltando-se para a mulher, disse a Simão: Vês esta mulher? Entrei em tua casa e não me deste água para lavar os pés; mas esta, com as suas lágrimas, regou-me os pés e enxugou-os com os seus cabelos. Não me deste o ósculo; mas esta, desde que entrou, não cessou de beijar-me os pés. Não me ungiste a cabeça com óleo; mas esta, com perfume, ungiu-me os pés. Por isso te digo: seus numerosos pecados lhe foram perdoados, porque ela tem demonstrado muito amor. Mas ao que pouco se perdoa, pouco ama. E disse a ela: Perdoados te são os pecados. Os que estavam com ele à mesa começaram a dizer, então: Quem é este homem que até perdoa pecados? Mas Jesus, dirigindo-se à mulher, disse-lhe: Tua fé te salvou; vai em paz.

Lesson (Hosea 14: 2-10)
Israel, convert to the Lord your God. For you have been ruined by your own iniquity. Take these words with you and return to the Lord. And say to him, “Remove all iniquity and accept the good. And we will repay the calves of our lips. Assur will not save us; we will not ride on horses. Neither will we say any more, ‘The works of our hands are our gods,’ for those that are in you will have mercy on the orphan.” I will heal their contrition; I will love them spontaneously. For my wrath has been turned away from them. I will be like the dew; Israel will spring forth like the lily, and his root will spread out like that of the cedars of Lebanon. His branches will advance, and his glory will be like the olive tree, and his fragrance will be like that of the cedars of Lebanon. They will be converted, sitting in his shadow. They will live on wheat, and they will grow like a vine. His memorial will be like the wine of the cedars of Lebanon. Ephraim will say, “What are idols to me any more?” I will listen to him, and I will set him straight like a healthy spruce tree. Your fruit has been found by me. Who is wise and will understand this? Who has understanding and will know these things? For the ways of the Lord are straight, and the just will walk in them, but truly, the traitors will fall in them.
Gospel (Luke 7: 36-50)
The continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
In that time, certain Pharisees petitioned him, so that they might eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and he reclined at table. And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner, found out that he was reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, so she brought an alabaster container of ointment. And standing behind him, beside his feet, she began to wash his feet with tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and she kissed his feet, and she anointed them with ointment. Then the Pharisee, who had invited him, upon seeing this, spoke within himself, saying, “This man, if he were a prophet, would certainly know who and what kind of woman is this, who is touching him: that she is a sinner.” And in response, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Speak, Teacher.” “A certain creditor had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And since they did not have the ability to repay him, he forgave them both. So then, which of them loves him more?” In response, Simon said, “I suppose that it is he to whom he forgave the most.” And he said to him, “You have judged correctly.” And turning to the woman, he said to Simon: “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You gave me no water for my feet. But she has washed my feet with tears, and has wiped them with her hair. You gave no kiss to me. But she, from the time that she entered, has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil. But she has anointed my feet with ointment. Because of this, I tell you: many sins are forgiven her, because she has loved much. But he who is forgiven less, loves less.” Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven you.” And those who sat at table with him began to say within themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” Then he said to the woman: “Your faith has brought you salvation. Go in peace.”
