EXALTAÇÃO DA SANTA CRUZ
Festa de 2ª Classe- Missa própria
A festa de hoje teve por objetivo único a invenção da Santa Cruz, levada a efeito por Santa Helena, e a dedicação das basílicas constantinianas, consagradas a 14 de setembro de 335. Mais tarde porém, além da memória destes acontecimentos dos quais referimos, foi a restituição da Santa Cruz feita pelos persas, que apoderara-se de Jerusalém e da relíquia da Vera Cruz. Quatorze anos mais tarde o imperador Heráclito derrotou Cósroas e exigiu dele a entrega da preciosa relíquia. Entrando em Jerusalém, quis levar ele mesmo a Santa Cruz com grande pompa real para a repor no Calvário, se sentiu preso por uma força invisível que o não deixou prosseguir. Zacarias Bispo de Jerusalém e testemunha presencial do fato, advertiu então: “com tais vestes estais longe de imitar a Jesus Cristo e a humildade com que levou consigo a Cruz”. Heráclito despojou-se então das vestes riquíssimas que envergava, descalçou-se, cobriu-se com um manto ordinário e pode sem dificuldade levar a Santa Cruz até o Calvário. A morte do Senhor na cruz foi simultaneamente o seu trunfo e sacrifício. Ele o predissera na véspera da Paixão: “é agora que o príncipe deste mundo será lançado fora: e quando eu me elevar da terra, tudo atrairei a mim”.
São Paulo constata-o por seu lado ao salientar que a exaltação de Cristo assenta no sofrimento e tira para nós a conseqüência: “Devemos gloriar-nos na Cruz de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo”. Unamo-nos em espírito com os fiéis na Basílica da Santa Cruz de Jerusalém em Roma, que veneram hoje as relíquias da Santa Cruz, em que se operou o mistério da redenção dos homens.

Epístola (Fil 2, 5-11)
Leitura da Epístola de São Paulo Apóstolo aos Filipenses .
Irmãos: Dedicai-vos mutuamente a estima que se deve em Cristo Jesus. Sendo ele de condição divina, não se prevaleceu de sua igualdade com Deus, mas aniquilou-se a si mesmo, assumindo a condição de escravo e assemelhando-se aos homens. E, sendo exteriormente reconhecido como homem, humilhou-se ainda mais, tornando-se obediente até a morte, e morte de cruz. Por isso Deus o exaltou soberanamente e lhe outorgou o nome que está acima de todos os nomes, para que ao nome de Jesus (aqui se ajoelha) se dobre todo joelho no céu, na terra e nos infernos. E toda língua confesse, para a glória de Deus Pai, que Jesus Cristo é Senhor.
Evangelho (Jo 12, 31-36)

Naquele Tempo: Disse Jesus às turbas do Judeus: Agora é o juízo deste mundo; agora será lançado o príncipe deste mundo. E eu, quando for levantado da terra, atrairei tudo a mim. Dizia isto para designar de que morte havia de morrer. Respondeu-lhe a multidão: Nós aprendemos da lei que Cristo permanece eternamente; e como dizes tu que o filho do homem deve ser levantado? Quem é este filho do homem? Respondeu-lhes então Jesus: Ainda por um pouco de tempo está a luz convosco. Andai enquanto tendes luz, para que não surpreendam as trevas; quem caminha nas trevas não sabe para onde vai. Enquanto tendes luz, crede na luz para que sejais filhos da luz.

Epistle (Philippians 2: 5-11)

Brethren let this mind be in you which was also in Jesus Christ: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He humbled Himself, becoming obedient even unto death, even to the death of the cross. For which cause God also hath exalted Him, and hath given Him a Name which is above all names: (here all kneel) that in the Name of Jesus every knee should bow,of those that are in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth and that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.
Gospel (John 12: 31-36)

At that time: Jesus said to the multitude of the Jews, “Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to Myself.” (Now this He said, signifying what death He should die.) The multitude answered Him, “We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth forever: and how sayest Thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is the Son of man?” Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. Whilst you have the light, believe in the light; that you may be the children of light.”
