SANTO DO DIA

Santo Estevão, Primeiro Mártir

Estava ainda no berço a Igreja, quando Estevão recebeu dos Apóstolo a missão de organizar s refeições para os pobres da comunidade. E fez tais prodígios e milagres (Epístola) que alguns judeus se perturbaram e o levaram perante o sinédrio. Jesus tinha acusado os judeus de terem lapidado os profetas; Estevão, por sua vez, ao dirigir-se aos seus juízes, declararam-lhes que, ao crucificarem Cristo, se mostraram-se dignos dos seus antepassados aos quais mataram os enviados de Deus; e levantando os olhos aos céus, clama: “Eis que vejo o filho do homem, de pé e a direita,  de Deus”. Que admirável testemunho da divindade desse Menino que só adoramos no presépio. Ao ouvirem estas palavras os judeus, cumprindo o que o mestre havia dito deles, precipitaram-se sobre Estevão e lapidaram-no, enquanto que ele, de joelhos entregava a sua alma aos Senhor solicitando o perdão dos pecados para seus algozes.

Estevão é a primeira testemunha de Cristo, e é justo também que seja ele o primeiro do cortejo glorioso dos santos que cercam o berço do Salvador. O seu nome está inscrito no Cânon. Imitemos este grande exemplo de santo Estevão cuja a caridade nos ensina a amar até os próprios inimigos e como ele estejamos prontos  dar a Cristo recém-nascido vida por vida.

LEITURAS/LESSONS

Leitura (At 6, 8-10; 7, 54-59)

Leitura dos Atos dos Apóstolos.

Naquele tempo: Estêvão, cheio de graça e fortaleza, fazia grandes milagres e prodígios entre o povo. Mas alguns da sinagoga, chamada dos Libertos, dos cirenenses, dos alexandrinos e dos que eram da Cilícia e da Ásia, levantaram-se para disputar com ele. Não podiam, porém, resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito que o inspirava. Ao ouvir tais palavras, esbravejaram de raiva e rangiam os dentes contra ele. Mas, cheio do Espírito Santo, Estêvão fitou o céu e viu a glória de Deus e Jesus de pé à direita de Deus: Eis que vejo, disse ele, os céus abertos e o Filho do Homem, de pé, à direita de Deus. Levantaram então um grande clamor, taparam os ouvidos e todos juntos se atiraram furiosos contra ele. Lançaram-no fora da cidade e começaram a apedrejá-lo. As testemunhas depuseram os seus mantos aos pés de um moço chamado Saulo. E apedrejavam Estêvão, que orava e dizia: Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito. Posto de joelhos, exclamou em alta voz: Senhor, não lhes leves em conta este pecado… A estas palavras, expirou.

Evangelho (Mt 23, 34-39)

Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos Escribas e Fariseus: Vede, eu vos envio profetas, sábios, doutores. Matareis e crucificareis uns e açoitareis outros nas vossas sinagogas. Persegui-los-eis de cidade em cidade, para que caia sobre vós todos o sangue inocente derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue de Abel, o justo, até o sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, a quem matastes entre o templo e o altar. Em verdade vos digo: todos esses crimes pesam sobre esta raça. Jerusalém, Jerusalém, que matas os profetas e apedrejas aqueles que te são enviados! Quantas vezes eu quis reunir teus filhos, como a galinha reúne seus pintinhos debaixo de suas asas… e tu não quiseste! Pois bem, a vossa casa vos é deixada deserta. Porque eu vos digo: já não me vereis de hoje em diante, até que digais: Bendito seja aquele que vem em nome do Senhor.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles.

In that time: Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people. Now there arose some, of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke. Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart: and they gnashed with their teeth at him. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. And they, crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears and with one accord ran violently upon him. And casting him forth without the city. they stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, invoking and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And falling on his knees, he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not his sin to their charge: And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord.

Gospel (Matt. 23: 54-59)

The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew. 

At that time Jesus said to the Scribes and Pharisees: “Behold I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes, and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: that upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Zacharias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldst not? Behold your house shall be left to you desolate. For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth, till you say: Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.”
