Naquele tempo: disse Jesus a multidão: se alguém vem a mim e não odeia seu pai, sua mãe, sua mulher, seus filhos, seus irmãos, suas irmãs e até a sua própria vida, não pode ser meu discípulo. E quem não carrega a sua cruz e me segue, não pode ser meu discípulo. Quem de vós, querendo fazer uma construção, antes não se senta para calcular os gastos que são necessários, a fim de ver se tem com que acabá-la? Para que, depois que tiver lançado os alicerces e não puder acabá-la, todos os que o virem não comecem a zombar dele, dizendo: Este homem principiou a edificar, mas não pode terminar. Ou qual é o rei que, estando para guerrear com outro rei, não se senta primeiro para considerar se com dez mil homens poderá enfrentar o que vem contra ele com vinte mil? De outra maneira, quando o outro ainda está longe, envia-lhe embaixadores para tratar da paz. Assim, pois, qualquer um de vós que não renuncia a tudo o que possui não pode ser meu discípulo.

At that time, Jesus said to the crowds, If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, and wife and children, and brother and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. And he who does not carry his cross and follow Me, cannot be My disciple. For which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the outlays that are necessary, whether he has the means to complete it? Lest, after he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all who behold begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish!’ Or what king setting out to engage in battle with another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him? Or else, whilst the other is yet at a distance, he sends a delegation and asks the terms of peace. So, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he possesses, cannot be my disciple.

Naquele tempo: disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: Estejam cingidos os vossos rins e acesas as vossas lâmpadas. Sede semelhantes a homens que esperam o seu senhor, ao voltar de uma festa, para que, quando vier e bater à porta, logo lha abram. Bem-aventurados os servos a quem o senhor achar vigiando, quando vier! Em verdade vos digo: cingir-se-á, fá-los-á sentar à mesa e servi-los-á. Se vier na segunda ou se vier na terceira vigília e os achar vigilantes, felizes daqueles servos! Sabei, porém, isto: se o senhor soubesse a que hora viria o ladrão, vigiaria sem dúvida e não deixaria forçar a sua casa. Estai, pois, preparados, porque, à hora em que não pensais, virá o Filho do Homem.

Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.

Disse-lhes também: Levantar-se-ão nação contra nação e reino contra reino. Haverá grandes terremotos por várias partes, fomes e pestes, e aparecerão fenômenos espantosos no céu. Mas, antes de tudo isso, vos lançarão as mãos e vos perseguirão, entregando-vos às sinagogas e aos cárceres, levando-vos à presença dos reis e dos governadores, por causa de mim. Isto vos acontecerá para que vos sirva de testemunho. Gravai bem no vosso espírito de não preparar vossa defesa, porque eu vos darei uma palavra cheia de sabedoria, à qual não poderão resistir nem contradizer os vossos adversários. Sereis entregues até por vossos pais, vossos irmãos, vossos parentes e vossos amigos, e matarão muitos de vós. Sereis odiados por todos por causa do meu nome. Entretanto, não se perderá um só cabelo da vossa cabeça. É pela vossa constância que alcançareis a vossa salvação.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; these things must first come to pass, but the end will not be at once. Then He said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be great earthquakes in various places, and pestilences and famines, and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all these things they will arrest you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, dragging you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. It shall lead to your bearing witness. Resolve therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how you are to make your defense. For I Myself will give you utterance and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist or gainsay. But you will be delivered up by your parents and brothers and relatives and friends; and some of you they will put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake; yet not a hair of your head shall perish. By your patience you will win your souls.

Cinco dentre elas eram tolas e cinco, prudentes. Tomando suas lâmpadas, as tolas não levaram óleo consigo. As prudentes, todavia, levaram de reserva vasos de óleo junto com as lâmpadas. Tardando o esposo, cochilaram todas e adormeceram. No meio da noite, porém, ouviu-se um clamor: Eis o esposo, ide-lhe ao encontro. E as virgens levantaram-se todas e prepararam suas lâmpadas. Five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, while the wise did take oil in their vessels with the lamps. Then as the bridegroom was long in coming, they all became drowsy and slept. And at midnight a cry arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ The wise answered, saying, ‘Lest there may not be enough for us and for you, go rather to those who sell it, and buy some for yourselves.’ Now while they were gone to buy it, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Finally there came also the other virgins, who said, ‘Sir, sir, open the door for us!’ But he answered and said, ‘Amen I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Aí se achava um grande número de seus discípulos e uma grande multidão de pessoas vindas da Judéia, de Jerusalém, da região marítima, de Tiro e Sidônia, que tinham vindo para ouvi-lo e ser curadas das suas enfermidades. E os que eram atormentados dos espíritos imundos ficavam livres. Todo o povo procurava tocá-lo, pois saía dele uma força que os curava a todos. Então ele ergueu os olhos para os seus discípulos e disse: Bem-aventurados vós que sois pobres, porque vosso é o Reino de Deus! Bem-aventurados vós que agora tendes fome, porque sereis fartos! And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd were trying to touch Him, for power went forth from Him and healed all. And He lifted up His eyes to His disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men hate you, and when they shut you out, and reproach you, and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and exult, for behold your reward is great in heaven.

Como viesse a faltar vinho, a mãe de Jesus disse-lhe: Eles já não têm vinho. Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Mulher, isso compete a nós? Minha hora ainda não chegou. Disse, então, sua mãe aos serventes: Fazei o que ele vos disser. Ora, achavam-se ali seis talhas de pedra para as purificações dos judeus, que continham cada qual duas ou três medidas. Jesus ordena-lhes: Enchei as talhas de água. Eles encheram-nas até em cima. Tirai agora , disse-lhes Jesus, e levai ao chefe dos serventes. E levaram. Logo que o chefe dos serventes provou da água tornada vinho, não sabendo de onde era (se bem que o soubessem os serventes, pois tinham tirado a água), chamou o noivo e disse-lhe: É costume servir primeiro o vinho bom e, depois, quando os convidados já estão quase embriagados, servir o menos bom. Mas tu guardaste o vinho melhor até agora. Este foi o primeiro milagre de Jesus; realizou-o em Caná da Galiléia. Manifestou a sua glória, e os seus discípulos creram nele.

His mother said to the attendants, Do whatever He tells you. Now six stone water-jars were placed there, after the Jewish manner of purification, each holding two or three measures. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them, Draw out now, and take to the chief steward. And they took it to him. Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was – though the attendants who had drawn the water knew, – the chief steward called the bridegroom, and said to him, Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But you have kept the good wine until now. This first of His signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
