In illo témpore: Cogitavérunt príncipes sacerdótum, ut et Lázarum interfícerent: quia multi propter illum abíbant ex Iudaeis, et credébant in Iesum. In crastínum autem turba multa, quæ vénerat ad diem festum, cum audíssent, quia venit Iesus Ierosólymam, accepérunt ramos palmárum, et processérunt óbviam ei, et clamábant: Hosánna, benedíctus, qui venit in nómine Dómini, Rex Israël. Iesus autem respóndit eis, dicens: Venit hora, ut clarificétur Fílius hóminis. Et ego si exaltátus fúero a terra, ómnia traham ad meípsum. – Hoc autem dicebat, signíficans, qua morte esset moritúrus. – Respóndit ei turba: Nos audívimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in ætérnum, et quómodo tu dicis: Oportet exaltári Fílium hominis? Quis est iste Fílius hominis? Dixit ergo eis Iesus: Adhuc módicum lumen in vobis est. Ambuláte, dum lucem habétis, ut non vos ténebræ comprehéndant: et qui ámbulat in ténebris, nescit, quo vadat. João 12:10-36
Naquele tempo: os príncipes dos sacerdotes resolveram tirar a vida também a Lázaro, porque muitos judeus, por causa dele, se afastavam e acreditavam em Jesus. No dia seguinte, uma grande multidão que tinha vindo à festa em Jerusalém ouviu dizer que Jesus se ia aproximando. Saíram-lhe ao encontro com ramos de palmas, exclamando: Hosana! Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor, o rei de Israel! Tendo Jesus encontrado um jumentinho, montou nele, segundo o que está escrito: Não temas, filha de Sião, eis que vem o teu rei montado num filho de jumenta (Zc 9,9). Os seus discípulos a princípio não compreendiam essas coisas, mas, quando Jesus foi glorificado, então se lembraram de que isto estava escrito a seu respeito e de que assim lho fizeram. A multidão, pois, que se achava com ele, quando chamara Lázaro do sepulcro e o ressuscitara, aclamava-o. Por isso o povo lhe saía ao encontro, porque tinha ouvido que Jesus fizera aquele milagre. Mas os fariseus disseram entre si: Vede! Nada adiantamos! Reparai que todo mundo corre após ele! Havia alguns gregos entre os que subiram para adorar durante a festa. Estes se aproximaram de Filipe (aquele de Betsaida da Galiléia) e rogaram-lhe: Senhor, quiséramos ver Jesus. Filipe foi e falou com André. Então André e Filipe o disseram ao Senhor. Respondeu-lhes Jesus: É chegada a hora para o Filho do Homem ser glorificado. Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: se o grão de trigo, caído na terra, não morrer, fica só; se morrer, produz muito fruto. Quem ama a sua vida, perdê-la-á; mas quem odeia a sua vida neste mundo, conservá-la-á para a vida eterna. Se alguém me quer servir, siga-me; e, onde eu estiver, estará ali também o meu servo. Se alguém me serve, meu Pai o honrará. Presentemente, a minha alma está perturbada. Mas que direi?… Pai, salva-me desta hora… Mas é exatamente para isso que vim a esta hora. Pai, glorifica o teu nome! Nisto veio do céu uma voz: Já o glorifiquei e tornarei a glorificá-lo. Ora, a multidão que ali estava, ao ouvir isso, dizia ter havido um trovão. Outros replicavam: Um anjo falou-lhe. Jesus disse: Essa voz não veio por mim, mas sim por vossa causa. Agora é o juízo deste mundo; agora será lançado fora o príncipe deste mundo. E quando eu for levantado da terra, atrairei todos os homens a mim. Dizia, porém, isto, significando de que morte havia de morrer. A multidão respondeu-lhe: Nós temos ouvido da lei que o Cristo permanece para sempre. Como dizes tu: Importa que o Filho do Homem seja levantado? Quem é esse Filho do Homem? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Ainda por pouco tempo a luz estará em vosso meio. Andai enquanto tendes a luz, para que as trevas não vos surpreendam; e quem caminha nas trevas não sabe para onde vai. Enquanto tendes a luz, crede na luz, e assim vos tornareis filhos da luz. Jesus disse essas coisas, retirou-se e ocultou-se longe deles.

At that time, the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also. For on his account many of the Jews began to leave them and to believe in Jesus. Now the next day, the great crowd which had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of palms and went forth to meet Him. And they cried out, Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young ass, and sat upon it, as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion; behold, your King comes, sitting upon the colt of an ass. These things His disciples did not at first understand. But when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him, and that they had done these things to Him. The crowd therefore, which was with Him when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness to Him. And the reason why the crowd also went to meet Him was that they heard that He had worked this sign. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do you see that we avail nothing? Behold, the entire world has gone after Him! Now there were certain Gentiles among those who had gone up to worship on the feast. These therefore approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip came and told Andrew; again, Andrew and Philip spoke to Jesus. But Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. He who loves his life, loses it; and he who hates his life in this world keeps it unto life everlasting. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am there also shall My servant be. If anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him. Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour! No, this is why I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name! There came therefore a voice from heaven, I have both glorified it, and I will glorify it again. Then the crowd which was standing round and had heard, said that it had thundered. Others said, An angel has spoken to Him. Jesus answered and said, Not for Me did this voice come, but for you. Now is the judgment of the world; now will the prince of the world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to Myself. Now He said this signifying by what death He was to die. The crowd answered Him, We have heard from the Law that the Christ abides forever. And how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man? Jesus therefore said to them, Yet a little while the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.

In illo témpore: Collegérunt pontífices et pharisaei concílium advérsus Iesum, et dicébant: Quid fácimus, quia hic homo multa signa facit? Si dimíttimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum: et vénient Románi, et tollent nostrum locum et gentem. Unus autem ex ipsis, Cáiphas nómine, cum esset póntifex anni illíus, dixit eis: Vos nescítis quidquam, nec cogitátis, quia expédit vobis, ut unus moriátur homo pro pópulo, et non tota gens péreat. Hoc autem a semetípso non dixit: sed cum esset póntifex anni illíus, prophetávit, quod Iesus moritúrus erat pro gente, et non tantum pro gente, sed ut fílios Dei, qui erant dispérsi, congregáret in unum. Ab illo ergo die cogitavérunt, ut interfícerent eum. Iesus ergo iam non in palam ambulábat apud Iudaeos: sed ábiit in regiónem iuxta desértum, in civitátem, quæ dícitur Ephrem, et ibi morabátur cum discípulis suis.

João 11:47-54
Naquele tempo: Os pontífices e os fariseus convocaram o conselho contra Jesus e disseram: Que faremos? Esse homem multiplica os milagres. Se o deixarmos proceder assim, todos crerão nele, e os romanos virão e arruinarão a nossa cidade e toda a nação. Um deles, chamado Caifás, que era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano, disse-lhes: Vós não entendeis nada! Nem considerais que vos convém que morra um só homem pelo povo, e que não pereça toda a nação. E ele não disse isso por si mesmo, mas, como era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano, profetizava que Jesus havia de morrer pela nação, e não somente pela nação, mas também para que fossem reconduzidos à unidade os filhos de Deus dispersos. E desde aquele momento resolveram tirar-lhe a vida. Em conseqüência disso, Jesus já não andava em público entre os judeus. Retirou-se para uma região vizinha do deserto, a uma cidade chamada Efraim, e ali se detinha com seus discípulos.

At that time, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together a council against Jesus, and said, What are we doing? for this man is working many signs. If we let Him alone as He is, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. But one of them, Caiphas, being high priest that year, said to them, You know nothing at all; nor do you reflect that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people, instead of the whole nation perishing. This, however, he said not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was to die for the nation; and not only for the nation, but that He might gather into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. So from that day forth their plan was to put Him to death. Jesus therefore no longer went about openly among the Jews, but withdrew to the district near the desert, to a town called Ephrem; and there He stayed with His disciples.

Naquele tempo: Um fariseu convidou Jesus a ir comer com ele. Jesus entrou na casa dele e pôs-se à mesa. Uma mulher pecadora da cidade, quando soube que estava à mesa em casa do fariseu, trouxe um vaso de alabastro cheio de perfume; e, estando a seus pés, por detrás dele, começou a chorar. Pouco depois suas lágrimas banhavam os pés do Senhor e ela os enxugava com os cabelos, beijava-os e os ungia com o perfume. Ao presenciar isto, o fariseu, que o tinha convidado, dizia consigo mesmo: Se este homem fosse profeta, bem saberia quem e qual é a mulher que o toca, pois é pecadora. Então Jesus lhe disse: Simão, tenho uma coisa a dizer-te. Fala, Mestre, disse ele. Um credor tinha dois devedores: um lhe devia quinhentos denários e o outro, cinqüenta. Não tendo eles com que pagar, perdoou a ambos a sua dívida. Qual deles o amará mais? Simão respondeu: A meu ver, aquele a quem ele mais perdoou. Jesus replicou-lhe: Julgaste bem. E voltando-se para a mulher, disse a Simão: Vês esta mulher? Entrei em tua casa e não me deste água para lavar os pés; mas esta, com as suas lágrimas, regou-me os pés e enxugou-os com os seus cabelos. Não me deste o ósculo; mas esta, desde que entrou, não cessou de beijar-me os pés. Não me ungiste a cabeça com óleo; mas esta, com perfume, ungiu-me os pés. Por isso te digo: seus numerosos pecados lhe foram perdoados, porque ela tem demonstrado muito amor. Mas ao que pouco se perdoa, pouco ama. E disse a ela: Perdoados te são os pecados. Os que estavam com ele à mesa começaram a dizer, então: Quem é este homem que até perdoa pecados? Mas Jesus, dirigindo-se à mulher, disse-lhe: Tua fé te salvou; vai em paz.

And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner, upon learning that He was at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment; and standing behind Him at His feet, she began to bathe His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed His feet, and anointed them with ointment. Now when the Pharisee, who had invited Him, saw it, he said to himself, This man, were He a prophet, would surely know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner. And Jesus answered and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he said, Master, speak. A certain money-lender had two debtors; the one owed five hundred denarii, the other fifty. As they had no means of paying, he forgave them both. Which of them, therefore, will love him more? Simon answered and said, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave more. And He said to him, You have judged rightly. And turning to the woman, He said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I came into your house; you gave Me no water for My feet; but she has bathed My feet with tears, and has wiped them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss; but she, from the moment she entered, has not ceased to kiss My feet. You did not anoint my head with oil; but she has anointed My feet with ointment. Wherefore I say to you, her sins, many as they are, shall be forgiven her, because she has loved much. But he to whom little is forgiven, loves little. And He said to her, Your sins are forgiven. And they who were at table with Him began to say within themselves, Who is this man, who even forgives sins? But He said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace.

Entrando, o anjo disse-lhe: Ave, cheia de graça, o Senhor é contigo. Perturbou-se ela com estas palavras e pôs-se a pensar no que significaria semelhante saudação. O anjo disse-lhe: Não temas, Maria, pois encontraste graça diante de Deus. Eis que conceberás e darás à luz um filho, e lhe porás o nome de Jesus. Ele será grande e chamar-se-á Filho do Altíssimo, e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi; e reinará eternamente na casa de Jacó, e o seu reino não terá fim. Maria perguntou ao anjo: Como se fará isso, pois não conheço homem? Respondeu-lhe o anjo: O Espírito Santo descerá sobre ti, e a força do Altíssimo te envolverá com a sua sombra. Por isso o ente santo que nascer de ti será chamado Filho de Deus. Também Isabel, tua parenta, até ela concebeu um filho na sua velhice; e já está no sexto mês aquela que é tida por estéril, porque a Deus nenhuma coisa é impossível. Então disse Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor. Faça-se em mim segundo a tua palavra.

And when the angel had come to her, he said, Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. When she had heard him she was troubled at his word, and kept pondering what manner of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. Behold, you shall conceive in your womb and shall bring forth a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of David His father, and He shall be king over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end. But Mary said to the angel, How shall this happen, since I do not know man? And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you; and therefore the Holy One to be born shall be called the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth your kinswoman also has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month; for nothing shall be impossible with God. But Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word.

Naquele tempo: Jesus percorria a Galiléia. Ele não queria deter-se na Judéia, porque os judeus procuravam tirar-lhe a vida. Aproximava-se a festa dos judeus chamada dos Tabernáculos. Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: Parte daqui e vai para a Judéia, a fim de que também os teus discípulos vejam as obras que fazes. Pois quem deseja ser conhecido em público não faz coisa alguma ocultamente. Já que fazes essas obras, revela-te ao mundo. Com efeito, nem mesmo os seus irmãos acreditavam nele. Disse-lhes Jesus: O meu tempo ainda não chegou, mas para vós a hora é sempre favorável. O mundo não vos pode odiar, mas odeia-me, porque eu testemunho contra ele que as suas obras são más. Subi vós para a festa. Quanto a mim, eu não irei, porque ainda não chegou o meu tempo. Dito isto, permaneceu na Galiléia. Mas quando os seus irmãos tinham subido, então subiu também ele à festa, não em público, mas despercebidamente. Buscavam-no os judeus durante a festa e perguntavam: Onde está ele? E na multidão só se discutia a respeito dele. Uns diziam: É homem de bem. Outros, porém, diziam: Não é; ele seduz o povo. Ninguém, contudo, ousava falar dele livremente com medo dos judeus.

John 7:1-13
At that time, Jesus went about in Galilee, for He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were seeking to put Him to death. Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was at hand. His brethren therefore said to Him, Leave here and go into Judea that Your disciples also may see the works that You do; for no one does a thing in secret if he wants to be publicly known. If You do these things, manifest yourself to the world. For not even His brethren believed in Him. Jesus therefore said to them, My time has not yet come, but your time is always at hand. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I bear witness concerning it, that its works are evil. As for you, go up to the feast, but I do not go up to this feast, for My time is not yet fulfilled. When He had said these things He stayed on in Galilee. But as soon as His brethren had gone up to the feast, then He also went up, not publicly, but as it were privately. The Jews therefore were looking for Him at the feast, and were saying, Where is He? And there was much whispered comment among the crowd concerning Him. For some were saying, He is a good man. But others were saying, No, rather He seduces the crowd. Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of Him.

Naquele tempo: os príncipes dos sacerdotes enviaram guardas para prender Jesus. Disse Jesus: Ainda por um pouco de tempo estou convosco e então vou para aquele que me enviou. Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, nem podereis ir para onde estou. Os judeus perguntavam entre si: Para onde irá ele, que o não possamos achar? Porventura irá para o meio dos judeus dispersos entre os gregos, para tornar-se o doutor dos estrangeiros? Que significam essas palavras que nos disse: Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, e onde estou para lá não podereis ir? No último dia, que é o principal dia de festa, estava Jesus de pé e clamava: Se alguém tiver sede, venha a mim e beba. Quem crê em mim, como diz a Escritura: Do seu interior manarão rios de água viva (Zc 14,8; Is 58,11). Dizia isso, referindo-se ao Espírito que haviam de receber os que cressem nele.

At that time, the rulers and Pharisees sent attendants to seize Jesus. Jesus then said, Yet a little while I am with you, and then I go to Him Who sent Me. You will seek Me and will not find Me; and where I am you cannot come. The Jews therefore said among themselves, Where is He going that we shall not find Him? Will He go to those dispersed among the Gentiles , and teach the Gentiles? What is this statement that He has made, ‘You will seek Me and will not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’? Now on the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirst, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture says, ‘From within him there shall flow rivers of living waters.’ He said this, however, of the Spirit Whom they who believed in Him were to receive.

Naquele tempo: disse Jesus aos judeus: Quem de vós me acusará de pecado? Se vos falo a verdade, por que me não credes? Quem é de Deus ouve as palavras de Deus, e se vós não as ouvis é porque não sois de Deus. Responderam então os judeus: Não dizemos com razão que és samaritano, e que estás possesso de um demônio? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Eu não estou possesso de demônio, mas honro a meu Pai. Vós, porém, me ultrajais! Não busco a minha glória. Há quem a busque e ele fará justiça. Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: se alguém guardar a minha palavra, não verá jamais a morte. Disseram-lhe os judeus: Agora vemos que és possuído de um demônio. Abraão morreu, e também os profetas. E tu dizes que, se alguém guardar a tua palavra, jamais provará a morte… És acaso maior do que nosso pai Abraão? E, entretanto, ele morreu… e os profetas também. Quem pretendes ser? Respondeu Jesus: Se me glorifico a mim mesmo, a minha glória não é nada; meu Pai é quem me glorifica, aquele que vós dizeis ser o vosso Deus e, contudo, não o conheceis. Eu, porém, o conheço e, se dissesse que não o conheço, seria mentiroso como vós. Mas conheço-o e guardo a sua palavra. Abraão, vosso pai, exultou com o pensamento de ver o meu dia. Viu-o e ficou cheio de alegria. Os judeus lhe disseram: Não tens ainda cinqüenta anos e viste Abraão!… Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: antes que Abraão fosse, eu sou. A essas palavras, pegaram então em pedras para lhas atirar. Jesus, porém, se ocultou e saiu do templo.

At that time, Jesus said to the crowds of the Jews: Which of you can convict Me of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear is that you are not of God. The Jews therefore in answer said to Him, Are we not right in saying that You are a Samaritan, and have a devil? Jesus answered, I have not a devil, but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. Yet, I do not seek My own glory; there is One Who seeks and Who judges. Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone keep My word, he will never see death. The Jews therefore said, Now we know that You have a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and You say, ‘If anyone keep My word he will never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom do You make Yourself? Jesus answered, If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father Who glorifies Me, of Whom you say that He is your God. And you do not know Him, but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I shall be like you, a liar. But I know Him, and I keep His word. Abraham your father rejoiced that he was to see My day. He saw it and was glad. The Jews therefore said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am. They therefore took up stones to cast at Him; but Jesus hid Himself, and went out from the temple.
